Instagram is Developing a Separate Messaging App Called 'Threads' | Instagram’s latest assault on Snapchat is a messaging app called Threads

Facebook said to be developing a new messaging app called Threads

Facebook is reportedly developing a new messaging app aimed at helping users share more information more often with their closest friends. The app, called Threads, is meant to be a companion to Instagram, The Verge reported Monday.
Facebook's Instagram unit is developing a standalone messaging app called Threads. The new app will allow Instagram users to quickly send messages, photos and videos to those on their “close friends”

Threads will also support the sharing of location, speed, and battery life information. Facebook is currently testing this app internally. Another important feature of Threads is automatic sharing. Your close friends can always have real-time information about your location, speed, and more. This app could also be used by family members.
Instagram already allows direct messaging between users. According to the latest report by The Verge, Instagram is now developing a standalone messaging app called Threads which will act as a companion app for the main Instagram app. Unlike the Facebook Messenger app, Threads is meant to be used among a close group of people.
The app is called Threads, and, like Messenger is for Facebook, it’s designed to be a separate yet companion direct-messaging app for Instagram.
The Instagram team that was working on Direct was recently shuffled over to Facebook’s Messenger team, and Threads is currently being tested within Facebook — so it’s a safe bet that at least some of the now-defunct Direct team had a hand in Threads’ conception and/or development.

There is currently no information about when Threads will roll out to Instagram users.
